Hafize Gaye Erkan, Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, spoke at the inflation report information meeting. Stating that they expect inflation to peak in May 2024, Erkan also made a statement regarding crypto regulations.

Following the statements of Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek that crypto regulations have come to an end, today, Hafize Gaye Erkan, the head of the Central Bank, made a statement on the subject.

“We are working with CMB”

Erkan, who mostly made statements about inflation, spoke briefly about cryptocurrency regulations and said, “We are working with the CMB, the work continues.”

Providing information about digital currency, Erkan said the following:

“We aim to publish the report on digital currency phase 1 studies by the end of the year. In the second phase, legal and economic security dimensions will be discussed in 2024.”

Stating that there is no obligation to print 500 TL banknotes, which has been discussed for a long time, the central bank governor said, “There is no obligation to issue 500 TL banknotes. Due to the tightening monetary policies in the recent period, the volume of emission has decreased in real terms and remained below the forecasts.”
