In the DePin project io.net, in which many crypto companies such as Solana Ventures, OKX Ventures, Aptos Labs and Sandbox invested, it was revealed that some users were attempting to earn from the project’s own token by showing fake GPU power.

“1.8M fake GPUs attempting to connect to the network”

As is well known, DePin projects aim to decentralize physical infrastructure services from the monopoly of a certain group. This is where the users involved in the project come into play. The user who enters the system with their devices is rewarded for the service they provide. While io.net, which provides graphics processing power, also known as GPU, also rewards those who join the system with their devices, it was seen that a group tried to win a reward by showing fake GPU power.

“Like many startups we move fast, and sometimes we break things,” stated Shadid. “In this case, something broke, and someone or some group sought to exploit that. Ten days ago, we saw an enormous spike of ~1.8M fake GPUs attempting to connect to the network, and our team prioritized identifying and blocking these devices We played cat and mouse for a few days, but we finally solved the problem. Our team moved quickly to block these fake devices – ensuing a multi-day game of cat and mouse where we removed fake devices and blocked an attack vector while bad actors found other ways to game the system.”

“We are still on track to launch IO Cloud v2”

Shadid also emphasized that io.net’s token distribution process and future goals have not changed with these attacks:

“We are launching a second rewards program for suppliers running May 1st to May 30th, and I encourage any suppliers to reach out and talk to our team. We are here to help and answer questions. We are still on track to launch IO Cloud v2 and IO Coin – we will not let these bumps in the road slow us down.”
