The eyes of the whole world were in Argentina today. The South American country went to the polls to elect its president.
The election was completed at 18.00 local time and the results were announced about two hours later.
Accordingly, pro-Bitcoin candidate Javier Milei won the presidential election.
“Bitcoin is a movement against central bank fraud”
Milei, who had an extraordinary image, was also known for his support for Bitcoin. The new president made statements in this direction both during the election campaign and before. Describing Bitcoin as “a movement against central bank fraud”, Milei also stated that it is a way to protect against the ravages of inflation. Emphasizing that Bitcoin’s value is not tied to any government or organization and is therefore created as a globally recognized asset, the 53-year-old said that Bitcoin’s volatility should not be seen as a flaw, but rather as a distinctive feature.
“Bitcoin is the return of money to the private sector”
“Bitcoin represents a return to the private sector, the original creator of money,” Milei said in a television interview. Argentina’s new leader added that money is an invention of the private sector.
Bitcoin posts on X
On the other hand, Milei’s posts about Bitcoin on his X account draw attention. In a post in 2020, he shared a link to the website of a conference with the words “Watch this free conference on Bitcoin and crypto. Don’t let politicians steal your money!” It is also understood that Milei gives trainings on Bitcoin and economic theory.
Bitcoin surged after the election results in Argentina. While the number one cryptocurrency was trading below $37,000, it rose to $37,500 within minutes.
