Munchables faces $62.5M cyberattack

Munchables, an NFT-based game on Blast, the Ethereum layer 2 network, had $63 million Ether stolen overnight. While it is claimed that this attack was made with the insider operations of a North Korean developer hired in the team, in the morning, the stolen funds were sent to a multi-signature wallet and the keywords were shared with the team. It is stated that the funds are currently secured. It is not known why the developer suddenly wants to send the funds back.

Munchables faces $62.5M cyberattack

Munchables, the crypto-NFT game on the Blast network, was involved in a $63 million attack, or more accurately, a theft, overnight. The details on the subject were given by ZachXBT, a blockchain tracker and known for his successful research in such events.

“North Korean trust gained and stole”

ZachXBT also gave interesting information in his tweets on the subject. Stating that the 4 developers hired by the Munchables team may actually be the same person, ZachXBT said:

“Four different devs hired by the Munchables team and linked to the exploiter are likely all the same person as they: recommended each other for the job, regularly transferred payments to the same two exchange deposit addresses, funded each others wallets…”

At last the funds are back

The developer gave up stealing the funds in the morning. The reason for this is still unknown. It was learnt that the North Korean hacker suddenly sent the funds to a multi-signature wallet. The hacker also shared the keywords of this wallet with the Munchables team. It is stated that ZachXBT’s research is also an important factor in revealing the attacker.

The Pacman account retweeted by ZachXBT wrote that the stolen money reached $97 million and the funds were secured and used the following statements:

“$97m has been secured in a multisig by Blast core contributors. Took an incredible lift in the background but I’m grateful the ex munchables dev opted to return all funds in the end without any ransom required.”
