Big claim from Bloomberg: Turkey applied for BRICS

It is stated that Turkey has made an official application to join the BRICS economic group established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. According to Bloomberg, Turkey has made such a move in order to establish new alliances outside its Western allies.

Big claim from Bloomberg: Turkey applied for BRICS

The first steps were taken in 2006, and then in 2010, with the participation of South Africa in the economic co-operation group, which was named BRICS, it was stated that Turkey also made an official application. The news was reported by Bloomberg from the US media.

“The geopolitical centre of gravity is breaking away from the West”

According to the report, President Erdoğan and those close to him believe that the world’s geopolitical centres of gravity are now shifting away from the developed Western regions and that new ties should therefore be established in a multipolar world, in addition to the alliance with NATO. The sources told Bloomberg that they were not authorised to provide information on the matter and therefore requested anonymity.

In his speech at the graduation ceremony of the Turkish Military Academy this weekend, President Erdoğan also said that Turkey should develop relations with both the West and the East at the same time.

It’s getting bigger and bigger

The BRICS group has attracted the attention of developing countries in recent years. Iran, UAE, Ethiopia and Egypt joined the group this year. It was claimed that the group, which aims to break the hegemony of the US dollar in the trade world, would issue a BRICS special currency for a period. It was even heavily rumoured that BRICS members would start trading with Bitcoin.

The South American country Argentina, on the other hand, gave up its decision to enter BRICS after Javier Milei was elected president.

The nearest BRICS meeting will be held in Kazan, Russia between October 22-24. In addition to Turkey, Malaysia, Thailand and Azerbaijan are also reportedly interested in joining the group.
