Concerns rising in White House as the price of Bitcoin surges

As the price surpassed $57,000, it was learned that the White House is concerned about the electricity consumption of Bitcoin mining.

According to information provided by Fox Business’ Charles Gasparino, the Biden administration is concerned that mining activities will put a significant burden on the electricity grid during the rally. Gasparino said, “As the price of BTC surges and demand outpaces supply, White House worried BTC mining could put significant strain on the power grid; crypto officials tell Fox Business fears are overblown but will be used to try and increase regulation on the industry.”

The Biden administration has tended to closely scrutinize mining activity for some time. Earlier this month, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the US Department of Energy announced that it would commission an application to track miners’ electricity consumption with an “emergency” code. The move sparked outrage from mining companies and the Bitcoin community. The lawsuit was settled the previous day and the ministry was prevented from collecting such data.

According to data compiled by Cambridge University, the US is the country where Bitcoin mining is the most intensive. The US alone accounts for 38% of Bitcoin mining activity worldwide, followed by China with 21% and Kazakhstan with 13%.
