US President Joe Biden thanked Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for dropping charges against Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan and for his release. Biden also praised the two countries’ bilateral work on cryptocurrencies and illicit finance.

“President Biden conveyed his condolences to President Tinubu for the floods in Nigeria and thanked him for the release of Tigran Gambaryan, an American citizen and former US government employee,” the White House said in a statement.

Gambaryan was arrested in February along with another Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, on allegations that Binance was involved in illegal activities. While the two were under house arrest, Anjarwalla managed to escape and leave Nigeria. This led to Gambaryan being sent to prison. The executive had spent all of his time in prison since March and had serious health problems.

The court unexpectedly dropped all charges against Gambaryan last week.
