Letter to Biden from anti-crypto Warren: “Threatens US national security”

US Senator Elizabeth Warren, known for her harsh stance against Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies for years, wrote a letter to the Biden government and various organizations, this time mentioning Bitcoin mining in Iran. “This ongoing crypto mining activity by the Iranian government threatens our national security,” the senator said, noting that Iran allowed Bitcoin mining in 2019.

US Senator Elizabeth Warren, months before the elections in her country, seems to have stepped on the gas again on cryptocurrencies. This time, Warren addressed mining operations in Iran, stating that these operations support Hamas and other “terrorist” organizations.

Open letter to the Biden administration

In an open letter to the Biden administration, signed by fellow senator Angus King, Warren stated, “In the five years since Iran has raised millions of dollars through mining crypto… a steady revenue source that allows it to purchase imports, move funds domestically and internationally, and fund Hamas and other terrorist organizations.”

“A threat to US national security…”

Warren also said that the Iranian government’s actions threaten the national security of the United States:

“Mining for energy-intensive blockchains like Bitcoin can allow countries to monetize energy resources, some of which cannot be exported due to sanctions, How much revenue has Iranian crypto miners generated since 2021? What share is collected by the government or its affiliates? And to what extent do these funds support terrorism or military activities? This ongoing activity by the Iranian government threatens our national security, Unless we take action, Iran will continue to use crypto to fund attacks against Israel,”

Warren had previously claimed that North Korea, with the help of hacker groups, was supporting nuclear weapons projects through cryptocurrencies.
