In addition to being the AK Party Information and Communication Technologies Chairman, Omer Ileri, who is also an MP for Ankara, made a statement regarding cryptocurrency regulations. Ileri answered the questions of Anadolu Agency.
“Regulation is required for more than 10 million people”
Stating that cryptocurrency investors in Turkey are not opposed to regulation and even demand it, Ileri used the following statements:
“More than 10 million people in Turkey currently have cryptocurrency accounts. A regulation is required here. A significant part of these users agree that this area should be realised under state control in a way. It is voiced by everyone that there is a need for regulation here. In this direction, we have carried out various studies, especially our ministry. As of now, work continues in our parliamentary group.”
“We are working for Turkey to be a leader in this industry”
Stating that the regulation package will be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey after the 31 March elections, as Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said recently, Ileri stated that the goal is to pave the way for innovation:
“Blockchain technologies are an industry that we, as the AK Party, have been closely following for a while. As you remember, we had ‘Forum Metaverse’, “Block Chain Istanbul” events. Our President attended these events. These events have become the first event in which a state leader participated in this field. It is also an area we care about in terms of Turkey’s future. Being aware of the importance of this field, we are carrying out an important work to protect our citizens on the one hand, but on the other hand to pave the way for the field. It is becoming a really well-studied law proposal. In the field of crypto, there is no regulation that has been implemented at the federal level in the USA, and in the European Union, there is a regulation called ‘MiCA’, which has reached a consensus stage between the Council and the Parliament; it will become effective as of December 2024. We are working to make Turkey one of the leading countries in the world in this industry.”
“We also met with industry stakeholders. We understand them”
Referring to the meetings held with the cryptocurrency community in recent weeks, the President of Communication Technologies informed that they are now at the final stage in the work with them:
“We are creating a flexible infrastructure. We see that a really good regulation is emerging. We are approaching the final stages, it will be on our agenda right after the election. In the past, they used to say that we did not understand them. We understand what they mean very clearly and we have reflected their demands to a large extent in the proposal.”
“We want to protect citizens and investment”
Ileri, who also made statements about how to protect cryptocurrencies, said that they also want to close the way for bad actors:
” In the framework of fairness, to protect the investor, the citizen from misleading, to protect their investments, to close the way for the bad actors, but while doing all these, to pave the way for the industry, to do both at the same time. This is always the main problem; to solve this dilemma. We see that a very appropriate balance has been achieved here.”
