China, which banned cryptocurrencies in 2021 and has recently been much discussed with its social credit system, now wants to control virtual areas such as the metaverse. In the country, which continues its breakthrough in the digital field despite the ban on cryptocurrencies and mining, and the metaverse is expected to spread to a wider audience by the end of 2023, an important proposal on the subject has now come from a state institution.
According to POLITICO, China Mobile, China’s state telecommunications organization, has made a proposal to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the communications agency of the United Nations. The proposal calls for a digital identity for the metaverse and all other virtual spaces.
“Police will find it quickly”
“In order to maintain the necessary order and security in the virtual world…” the proposal said. The statement also noted that many people in the metaverse can spread untrue rumors and cause chaos, but with this system, the police will have a chance to find these people very quickly.
Similar to the social credit system…
As is well known, China has come to the forefront with the social credit system it has developed in recent years. Citizens who do not comply with certain rules are banned from actions such as buying plane and train tickets or making various other expenses.
China’s proposal to the UN group is expected to be voted on by the ITU, the relevant arm of the organization, in October.
An insider in the group told POLITICO that China is outpacing the US and the EU on proposals in virtual worlds.
